Brett McLouglin

Brett’s work dissolves the lines between art and design, putting process first. His love of early Web aesthetics, queer material history, and printed matter come together in fresh work packed with historical resonance. Print or digital, he works against corporate polish and branding, opting instead for texture and idiosyncratic typography.

His work interrogates legibility; durability and longevity; tradition formation; alternative sexuality; ritual; and more. Work that feels spontaneous is never an accident.

Artist’s statement

Brett is an artist and designer hailing from Baltimore and currently based in Chicago. After a decade of filmmaking, he has expanded his repertoire to include graphic design, print media, digital art, and more. Having a broad toolkit allows him to choose the best medium to communicate his intentions.

He graduated from Harvard in 2021, where he started as a filmmaker and finished as a more rounded studio artist. Since then, he works in education tech, creating polished designs by day — and making illegible gay bullshit by night. His work combines the early internet’s optimism with a love for subversive queer cultures, and the results range from minimal and subdued to crunchy and lawless. His work has been described as “illegible,” “bad clip art,” and “a big mistake.”
